Parashat Mishpatim

By Rabbi Shlomo Zargari:

״ויאמרו כל אשר דבר ה׳ נעשה ונשמע״
(שמות,כד,ז)

“They said, all that HaShem said we will perform and understand “

This is the verse in our Parasha regarding the acceptance of the Torah by our forefathers.
If we look back in the Parasha of last week, the verse states:

״ויענו כל העם יחדיו ויאמרו כל
אשר דבר ה׳ נעשה״ (י״ט,ח)

All the nation replied in unison and said: all that HaShem spoke we shall perform. The word נשמע ( understand ) is not mentioned, whereas in the Parasha of Yitro we have the word יחדיו ( in unison) .

It’s obvious to all, that not all the Misvot were given to the whole nation. Some are for Kohanim, some are only performed in the land of Yisrael and some only apply to when we have the Holy Temple. Yet all the Jews are connected to the Torah in it’s wholeness and perfection through ערבות our link to each other and the fact that we are guarantors for each other, or through the study of the Torah, ונשלמה פרים שפתנו through the study of, it’s as if we’re performing the Misvot.

In the Parasha of Yitro it it written יחדיו ( in unison) that we are linked to each other so it’s like we all accepted the Torah.
In our Parasha, it’s written ונשמע we will understand, through the study of the Torah we can “ perform “ all the Misvot!
