Parashat Shemot

Parasha Thoughts

By Rabbi Shlomo Zargari

Shalom,

Before Moshe was born, the stargazers of Pharoh warned him that the savior of the Children of Yisrael would be born. Moshe’s sister Miryam saw through prophecy that he was destined to save his people and bring them freedom. The Talmud (Sota 12.) teaches us the house was filled with light when Moshe was born. He was ready to be the redeemer since birth, but the time had not yet arrived.

Eighty years later was the time. Moshe was a shepherd for Yitro. He was with the sheep in the desert and reached Mount Sinai. On the mountain he noticed a burning bush; it kept burning but wouldn’t go out. Moshe said “I will turn aside now and look at this great sight why will the bush not be burnt “(Shemot 3,3)

The Midrash says that at that moment all Moshe did was turn around and look…Had Moshe not cared, had he not turned to look, had he continued on his way and gone ahead life as usual, nothing would have happened; he would have continued being a shepherd and the Children of Yisrael would have gone deeper into the exile of Egypt and the bush would have kept on burning. All he did was turn his head and everything followed. Hashem appeared to him, sent him to save the nation, and gave them the Torah!

Who knows what prophecies there are about every one of us and what plans the Almighty has for each individual? If we just take that step or if we just turn our heads in the right direction and away from things we should not be facing, and instead go in the path He wants us to- towards the light of Torah – then we will see that pleasant fire!
